Venu M. Nemani, MD, PhD - Cervical & Reconstructive Spine Surgeon

Dr. Nemani is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon with advanced training in all aspects of orthopaedic spine surgery, with a special interest and expertise in disorders of the cervical spine and in patients with spinal deformities.

Dr. Nemani is originally from Indiana and first moved to North Carolina to attend Duke University, where he graduated with distinction, and magna cum laude. He then moved to California where he simultaneously completed an MD and a PhD in Neuroscience at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), one of the premier medical and graduate schools in the country.  While he was at UCSF he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Nemani’s PhD dissertation elucidated a new mechanism by which nerve signaling is modulated with implications for neurodegenerative diseases.

Dr. Nemani then completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City, ranked by US News and World Report and Doximity as the #1 orthopaedic hospital and residency training program in the country. During his residency, Dr. Nemani also traveled abroad to learn innovative techniques from surgeons around the world, spending extensive time in Japan with surgeons in Tokyo and Kobe.  Dr. Nemani also was humbled to receive the Thomas P. Sculco award while at HSS. This was an award given by the nurses and the operating room staff to a resident who best exemplifies professionalism, compassion, and interdisciplinary collaboration for patient care. Dr. Nemani then pursued advanced subspecialty fellowship training, completing a combined neurosurgical / orthopaedic spine surgery fellowship at both Washington University in St. Louis and Columbia University, training under the world’s thought leaders in cervical spine surgery and spinal deformity surgery.

Dr. Nemani is a conservative orthopaedic spine surgeon, and believes in a multidisciplinary approach to treating spinal problems.  He works closely with his physical therapy and non-operative spine physician colleagues (physiatrists or physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians) to treat most spinal problems without surgery.  Only if non-operative measures have failed is surgery considered. If surgery is necessary, Dr. Nemani will recommend the safest and least invasive surgery that is tailored for each patient based on their individual needs and concerns.

Dr. Nemani has published extensively and has given many talks at national and international conferences on his research in spine surgery.  His research has been published in many of the top journals in spine surgery and neuroscience, including Spine, The Spine Journal, Neurosurgery, Neuron, and the Journal of Neuroscience. He has also written more than 15 book chapters on various topics in spine surgery to educate orthopaedic spine surgeons and neurosurgeons around the world on spinal surgery techniques. He is a candidate member of the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), the foremost organization dedicated to the treatment of patients with spinal deformities.  He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and AO Spine. He also travels to Ghana in West Africa as a volunteer orthopaedic spine surgeon, where he has surgically treated some of the most rare and complex spinal deformities in patients who otherwise would not have access to care.
